BAND ABSOLUTE
Band Absolute is a Korean band in Emory. It was first started six years ago and I'm currently the member of the 7th generation. I'm the vocal, obviously, and we have our keyboard, guitar, base, drum and two enthusiastic managers. Before coming to Emory I haven't been to any of the welcoming parties in Korea, so I wasn't in contact with any of the Korean freshmen this year. Though I was aware of this band beforehand, it was somewhat a challenge for me to apply for the band at first. It was my first time to the States, worried about every single thing, and I simply did not have ANY courage to try for something new. I had a big will to continue participating in a music-related group, but neither this band nor many other choirs could I confidently try for. Every audition was coming up, but I almost gave up with all of the clubs.
However, one of the few Korean friends I got to know changed my decision. Though we were not that close to each other at that time, he kept persuading me that he would tell the current band members about me so that I could feel more comfortable about the people. Believe it or not, he just told me that I look like a singer and that he can feel a musical atmosphere from me. "Well I do like singing, but.." This was basically all I have told him for a while. Despite my timidity, he did not give up making me reconsider the audition. Eventually at the last minute, like an hour before the audition, I decided to go to the audition.
Every students who were auditioning seemed so close to each other already. They were even quite close with the current band members, which made me even more coward. Even some of the students totally ignored my presence, talking about themselves as if they were already in the band. All of a sudden I felt that I should do well on this audition. No matter how other participants are close, no matter how much they are good, I decided to be confident about myself. Fortunately I got into the band and started my MUSIC LIFE in EMORY. First time being in a band, the overall atmosphere and the music genres was kind of awkward for me but it became I feel them interesting now. Now I think it was a good choice for me to not apply for another R&B group but to be in a band. Different from the performance in VIBE, I am the only one that sing, which means that I can take a huge part in choosing and arranging songs.
Last semester our generation performed for the first time, starting our own ABSOLUTE history. All the profits from the performance were donated to fight back Ebola in West Africa. It was a priceless experience and set my expectations high for my band life after all. I am definitely looking forward to my band's further activities.
